A Good Father

The Adventures of PopTart and Bean: A Good Father

Rain pattered against the bedroom window as PopTart and Bean sprawled across the floor. Their dolls were arranged in a grand tea party, complete with mismatched cups and saucers. The gloomy weather had canceled their plans to play outside, but the sisters didn’t mind. They had each other.

“Pass me the blue dress,” Bean said, reaching for one of the doll outfits. She smiled as she carefully buttoned it up. “This one’s going to look like a princess.”

PopTart handed it over, then leaned back on her elbows, watching Bean with a fond smile. “You really love making things beautiful, don’t you?”

Bean looked up. “Of course! Daddy always says beauty is a little glimpse of heaven.”

PopTart nodded. “He’s right. He says a lot of wise things. Have you ever noticed how much Daddy is like what the Bible says that God is like?”

Bean tilted her head. “What do you mean?”

PopTart picked up a doll and held it thoughtfully. “Well, think about it. Daddy takes care of us, right? He works hard so we have food to eat and a warm house to live in.”

Bean grinned. “And he makes pancakes on Sundays!”

“Exactly,” PopTart said. “But it’s more than that. When we make mistakes, he forgives us. Remember when you spilled paint all over the carpet last month?”

Bean cringed. “Yeah. I thought he was going to be so mad.”

“But he wasn’t,” PopTart reminded her. “He helped you clean it up and said he loved you no matter what. That’s a lot like how God forgives us when we mess up.”

Bean’s eyes sparkled. “And Daddy always listens, even when I’m telling him silly things about my day.”

PopTart smiled. “Just like God listens when we pray. He cares about every little thing in our lives.”

Bean hugged her knees. “Daddy does make me feel safe. Like when there’s a thunderstorm, and he sits with us until we fall asleep.”

PopTart nodded. “That’s how God is, too. He’s always with us, even when we’re scared or don’t know what to do.”

The sisters were quiet for a moment, listening to the rain. Then Bean spoke up. “Do you think Daddy learned how to be like God?”

PopTart smiled. “Maybe. God is the perfect Father, and He shows daddies how to take care of their families. That’s why Daddy prays and reads his Bible so much—he’s learning from the best.”

Bean hugged her doll tightly. “I love Daddy. And I love God, too. They both make me feel so special.”

PopTart reached over and squeezed her sister’s hand. “Me too, Bean. Me too.”
