PopTart and Bean’s Big Lesson on Justice, Mercy, and Grace
It was a sunny afternoon, and PopTart and Bean were sitting under the big oak tree in their backyard. Bean was busy weaving flower crowns while PopTart was deep in thought.
“What’s got you thinking so hard this time, PopTart?” Bean asked, placing a crown of daisies on her sister’s head.
PopTart smiled faintly and adjusted the crown. “Today in school, Mrs. Johnson taught us about justice, mercy, and grace. It’s been on my mind all day.”
“Justice, mercy, and grace?” Bean echoed, tilting her head. “That sounds... big.”
“It is,” PopTart said. “Justice is when someone does something wrong, and they get the punishment they deserve. Like when Joey stole Anna’s pencil, and Mrs. Johnson made him stay in for recess.”
Bean nodded. “That seems fair.”
“Right,” PopTart agreed. “But mercy is when someone doesn’t get the punishment they deserve. Like when you broke Mom’s vase, and she didn’t ground you.”
“Oh, yeah,” Bean said with a sheepish smile. “That was nice of her.”
PopTart’s eyes lit up as she leaned closer. “But grace is even bigger. Grace is when you don’t just avoid punishment, but you get something good you don’t deserve. Like if Mom had taken you out for ice cream after you broke the vase.”
Bean’s jaw dropped. “That’s amazing! But why would anyone do that?”
PopTart shrugged. “That’s what makes grace so special. It’s not something we earn—it’s a gift. It’s what God gives us.”
Bean tapped her chin thoughtfully. “So... has this ever happened to you?”PopTart nodded slowly. “Actually, it happened today at lunch. I accidentally spilled my juice all over Maggie’s drawing. I felt terrible and thought she’d be mad.”
“What did she do?” Bean asked, her eyes wide.
“She looked sad at first,” PopTart admitted. “But then she smiled and said it was okay. That was mercy because she forgave me instead of getting mad.”
Bean nodded eagerly. “And then what?”
PopTart grinned. “Then she gave me one of her extra cookies! That was grace—she gave me something good, even though I didn’t deserve it.”
Bean clapped her hands together. “I get it now! Justice, mercy, and grace. But... why would God give us grace if we don’t deserve it?”
PopTart pointed up at the sky. “Because He loves us more than we can imagine. It’s like how we sometimes mess up, but Mom and Dad still love us no matter what. Only with God, His love is even bigger.”Bean smiled and hugged her sister. “I think grace is my favorite. It’s like a surprise gift of love!”
PopTart laughed. “It is. And the best part? We can show grace to others too. Just like Maggie did for me.”
Bean picked up a flower and twirled it between her fingers. “I’m going to try to show grace to someone tomorrow. Maybe to Joey, since he always forgets his pencils.”
PopTart nodded. “That’s a great idea. And you know what? I think that’s how we show God’s love—by passing His grace along.”
The two sisters sat quietly for a moment, letting the lesson sink in. Then Bean jumped up, grabbing PopTart’s hand.
“Come on! Let’s go show Mom our flower crowns. Maybe she’ll give us ice cream for no reason—like grace!”
PopTart laughed as they ran back to the house, feeling grateful for everything they’d learned about justice, mercy, and grace.
