Mercy (Part 2)

The Adventures of PopTart and Bean: Mercy (part 2)

PopTart and Bean sat in their treehouse with a big poster board and colorful markers scattered all around them. PopTart had written "MERCY" in bold, bright letters at the top. She tapped the marker against her chin as she explained, "Mercy is when you don’t get the bad that you deserve. For my school project, we need to create a story about mercy. What do you think, Bean? What should the story be about?"

Bean scrunched her nose in thought. "Hmm, maybe we can make up a story about someone who did something wrong but didn’t get punished."

PopTart nodded, "Exactly! Let’s use our imagination."

*************************************************The Story of Max and the School Garden

Max was the new kid in the neighborhood. He didn’t have many friends yet and often felt lonely. One day during recess, he wandered over to the school’s garden. The garden was full of blooming flowers, juicy tomatoes, and tall sunflowers. It was beautiful, but Max didn’t feel happy. Instead, he felt jealous of how proud everyone seemed of the garden.

In his frustration, Max kicked the wooden fence and stomped on a row of sunflowers. When he realized what he’d done, he ran away, hoping no one would find out.

The next day, the school gardener, Mrs. Green, discovered the ruined sunflowers. She asked the class, "Does anyone know what happened to the garden?"

Max felt his face turn red as guilt bubbled up inside him. Finally, he raised his hand and stood up. "I… I… I’m sorry. I ruined the sunflowers. I don’t know why I did it, but it was wrong."

Mrs. Green’s face was serious. "Max, I’m very disappointed. You know how much the school cares about this garden. Do you realize how much work went into growing those sunflowers?"

Max nodded, tears starting to form. "I’m so sorry. I know I deserve to be punished. I’ll do anything to make it right."

Mrs. Green looked at him for a long moment, then said, "Max, you do deserve a punishment. But instead of punishing you, I’m going to give you mercy. You’ll help me plant new sunflowers, and we’ll make the garden even better."

Max couldn’t believe it. "You mean… I’m not in trouble?"

Mrs. Green smiled gently. "You’ve already shown you’re sorry. Mercy means not giving someone the bad they deserve. Let’s work together to fix this."

From that day on, Max became the garden’s biggest helper. The new sunflowers grew even taller than the ones before, and Max learned a lesson he would never forget.

Bean grinned as they finished. "That was fun! I’m glad Mrs. Green showed mercy to Max."

PopTart smiled back. "Me too. Mercy makes a big difference in the world, just like God’s mercy does for us."

"What’s next?" Bean asked, bouncing on her toes.

PopTart held up the next blank poster board and said with a twinkle in her eye, "Grace. That’s going to be the best one yet!"

Bible References and Stories About Mercy

PopTart and Bean added a special section to their story:

Bible Verses:

  1. Luke 6:36 “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”

  2. Micah 6:8 “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

  3. Ephesians 2:4-5 “But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.”

Bible Story: The sisters decided to include the story of Jonah and Nineveh (Jonah 1-4):

  • God told Jonah to warn the people of Nineveh that their city would be destroyed because of their wickedness. When Jonah finally obeyed, the people repented. Even though they deserved destruction, God showed them mercy and did not punish them. This story shows how God’s mercy is for everyone who truly turns away from wrongdoing.
