PopTart and Bean Explore Justice (part 2)
Poptart tapped her pencil against the desk as she stared out the window of their small, sunny living room. "Bean," she began, "what would you say if someone asked, 'What is justice?'"Bean, sitting cross-legged on the rug and tinkering with her doll’s dress, squinted up at her sister. "Isn’t it like... people getting what they deserve? Like when the teacher makes you stay in for recess because you didn’t do your homework?”
Poptart nodded. “Exactly. Justice is when we get what we deserve—whether it’s a reward or a consequence. But what does that really look like?”
Bean tilted her head. “Why are you asking?”
Poptart slid a notebook across the table. “Mrs. Baker wants me to write a story about Justice for my school project. I want it to make sense for a fourth-grader like you. Wanna help me come up with something?”
Bean’s face lit up. “Of course! Let’s make it an adventure.”
The Story of Jasper the Jackrabbit
Once upon a time, in the lush, green Meadow Valley, there was a mischievous jackrabbit named Jasper. Jasper was known for his love of carrots—so much so that he often sneaked into Farmer Tilly’s garden to snatch them.
Farmer Tilly had warned him several times, but Jasper always thought, It’s just a carrot or two. What’s the big deal?
One sunny morning, Jasper hopped through the garden fence and began feasting on the juiciest carrots he’d ever tasted. Suddenly, he heard a booming voice.
“JASPER!”
Farmer Tilly stood over him, hands on her hips. “You’ve been caught red-pawed! I’ve given you enough warnings. Now, you must face the consequences.”
Farmer Tilly called the animals of Meadow Valley to the farm. “Jasper has stolen from my garden repeatedly,” she announced. “Justice means he must repay what he took. Until then, he will work in the garden every day to replace the carrots he stole.”
Jasper’s ears drooped. He felt ashamed. “I’m sorry, Farmer Tilly,” he said quietly. “I promise to make it right.”
For the next several weeks, Jasper worked hard planting seeds, pulling weeds, and watering the garden. The other animals watched in amazement as the once-carefree jackrabbit took responsibility for his actions.
One day, Farmer Tilly smiled and handed Jasper a big bunch of fresh carrots. “You’ve learned your lesson, Jasper. Justice was served, but I hope you also learned something about honesty and responsibility.”
Jasper nodded. “I have, Farmer Tilly. From now on, I’ll earn my carrots the right way.”
Poptart’s Reflection
Bean clapped her hands. “I love it! Jasper got what he deserved, but it wasn’t too mean. It was fair.”
“That’s what Justice is,” Poptart said. “It’s about fairness. When we make bad choices, we face the consequences. It’s not always fun, but it helps us learn and grow.”
Bible Connections: Justice
Poptart decided to include a section about what the Bible says about Justice in her project.
Bible Verses
Romans 6:23 - “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Justice means that sin has a consequence—death.
Deuteronomy 32:4 - “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.”
God is perfectly just, and His justice is always fair.
Micah 6:8 - “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
Justice is something God values deeply.
Bible Stories
The Fall of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3): When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, justice required them to face the consequences of their actions.
Achan’s Sin (Joshua 7): Achan stole what was meant to be dedicated to God, and justice required that he face the consequences for disobeying God’s command.
