PopTart and Bean: Why Do We Have Rules?
PopTart and Bean ran into the house after school, their backpacks bouncing behind them. The smell of fresh cookies filled the air, and their mom smiled from the kitchen.“Hi, you two! How was school today?” she asked.
PopTart flopped onto the couch with a big sigh. “We talked about rules in class today, Mom. Teacher asked why we have rules, and then we talked about the Bible. Some kids said rules are to stop bad things, but others said they just ruin fun. No one could agree.”
Bean was munching on an apple. “Yeah, some kids thought Bible rules were too many and too hard to follow.”
Their dad walked in, drying his hands on a towel. “That sounds like a big question,” he said, sitting next to PopTart. “What do you think, PopTart?”
PopTart scrunched her face. “I guess rules make things fair, right? But sometimes it feels like there are just too many rules.”
Her mom brought over a plate of cookies. “What would happen if there were no rules at all? No rules at school, no rules at home, or even on the road?”
Bean’s eyes got big. “It would be crazy! Cars would crash, kids might get hurt running around, and everything would be a mess.”
“That’s right,” their dad said. “Rules are there to keep us safe and help us get along with each other. They’re like fences that stop us from falling into danger.”
PopTart tilted her head. “But why does the Bible have so many rules? We’re not driving cars.”
Her mom smiled. “The Bible’s rules are there for the same reason. God loves us and wants us to be safe and happy. Think about the Ten Commandments. They’re about loving God and being kind to others. When we follow them, life is better.”
“So, they’re not just random rules,” her dad added. “They’re like a recipe. If you want delicious cookies, you follow the recipe. God’s rules are a recipe for a good and happy life.”
PopTart’s eyes lit up. “So, Jesus gave us rules because He wants us to be safe and happy?”
“That’s right,” her mom said. “Remember when Jesus said the most important rules are to love God and love your neighbor? All the other rules fit under those two.”
Bean grinned. “Jesus made it easy for us: love God and love others, and everything else works out.”
PopTart nodded. “That makes sense. I want to be happy, and I don’t want to get hurt. Rules aren’t there to stop us from having fun, they’re there because God loves us.”
Her dad gave her a hug. “You’ve got it, PopTart. And if you ever wonder about a rule, just ask us. We’ll help you figure it out.”
PopTart smiled. “Thanks, Mom and Dad. I’m going to tell my teacher what I learned. Maybe it’ll help my classmates too.”
